I was actually going to post about a related topic anyway, and then seeing examples of what I wanted to talk about as part of the SurveyFail response gave me more of a reason.
Because seriously, something I have been seeing not just in this but in many other contexts is NOT AT ALL OK.
I don't write RPF/RPS, but if that's what floats your boat, turns you on, gets you off, fine. That is, it's fine if your purpose in writing it is one of the usual purposes for writing fanfic in general (you think A and B would be cute or hot together, you want to explore interesting WhatIf territory, whatever).
What is NOT OK is writing RPS of the SurveyFail principals as a way of mocking them. Seriously, it's like the general jerky-teenager practice of saying "that's so GAY!" as an insult.
NOT OK things along similar lines:
- Calling Ann Coulter "Mann Coulter". This turns trans into an insult. Not OK.
- Referring to Britney Spears as "Shitney Queers". Seriously, do I have to explain that one?
- Likewise, calling the Backstreet Boys the "Backdoor Boys". First, homophobic and second, perpetuating the stereotype that being a gay male is all and only about the anal sex.
- Something that I've done, too, and really need to stop: Using "fat" as part of the insult to Rush Limbaugh (or Michael Moore, if you're on the opposite side of this one).
- Mocking supermodels for being "anorexic" and saying they need to eat a fucking sandwich already. Real eating disorders are a) not a joke and b) not as simple as feeding someone a sandwich. (In fact, there's the whole issue of refeeding syndrome being a very bad thing, but that's far beyond the scope of this rant.)
You get the idea. Go ahead, criticize, mock, satirize to your heart's content. There are plenty of ways to do this without a) implying that being LGBT is bad, b) correlating weight with lack of intelligence, or c) mocking someone's mental illness.
