Actually, that's not my experience with this type of attitude. Same-gender friends are OK, and in many cases expected to be closer than the spouse and more understanding. There's that whole "men suck"/"women suck" thing to bond over, supposedly. But creating a genuine and caring non-sexual connection with a member of the opposite sex also debunks the whole Mars/Venus thing, and we can't have THAT. :P
